Book Group will meet on Thursday, January 21, at 7:30 a.m., and Friday, January 22, at noon, to discuss The Children Act by Ian McEwan. McEwan is a bestselling author of many books including Atonement. The Children Act was named a best book of the year by The Washington Post, NPR, Vogue, and BookRiot.
Fiona Maye is a leading High Court judge. She is called on to try an urgent case: for religious reasons, a seventeen-year-old boy is refusing the medical treatment that could save his life, and his devout parents share his wishes. Should the secular court overrule sincerely held faith?
In addition, this book will be the subject of the hospital-wide literature and medicine program Book Talk & Discussion from the Ethics Advisory Committee, on Wednesday, January 20, from noon-1 p.m. (with lunch) in the Wolbach Board Room. The discussion leader is Martha Montello, PhD, a literature-and-medicine scholar who will be here teaching at the Harvard Center for Bioethics in the January term. Please see the flyer for more information, including how to register.
Boston Children’s Hospital personnel are encouraged to join us in the AV Room in the Library on Thursday, January 21, at 7:30 a.m., or Friday, January 22, at noon, to participate in discussion about this novel. If you would like to be added to our Book Group email distribution list, please email the Library.
