Girl in Translation is a novel about the young Kimberly Chang, who emigrates from Hong Kong to Brooklyn with her mother. As a stellar student by day and sweatshop worker by night, she learns to navigate between these two lives, struggling with and attempting to hide her family’s staggering poverty while her mother’s hopes and dreams rest on her shoulders. Discussion questions for Girl in Translation are available on the author’s website.

Everything I Never Told You is the story of the Lee family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Marilyn and James Lee have high hopes for their favorite child, Lydia, until her body is found in a lake. With this, the family descends into chaos, as each member attempts to deal with the loss. The author’s website has a reading guide for Everything I Never Told You which includes discussion questions, a Q&A with the author, a soundtrack for the book, recommended reading, and more.

Boston Children’s Hospital personnel are encouraged to join us in the AV Room in the Library on Friday, July 10, at noon, or Thursday, July 30, at 7:30 a.m., to participate in discussion about these novels. If you would like to be added to our Book Group email distribution list, please contact Alison Clapp or Jessica LaBrie.
