Now available in prepublication from the National Academies Press is Graduate Medical Education That Meets the Nation’s Health Needs. This open-access title is an independent report examining the goals, governance, and financing of the graduate medical education system, which receives billions of dollars of public funds (predominantly through Medicare and Medicaid). The report addresses the ways in which the current system supports or hinders the development of a physician workforce prepared to provide high-quality, patient-centered, and affordable health care. In addition, the expert committee formed to conduct this review makes recommendations about innovative graduate medical education programs, improving transparency and accountability, and stronger oversight of the use of public funds in graduate medical education.
