Suggestions for Authors Selecting MeSH Descriptors

nlmlogoThe National Library of Medicine has recently updated its brief guide helping authors who wish to select MeSH descriptors (terms) as key words for their articles.

New to NLM’s suggestions is MeSH on Demand, a tool that can automatically identify relevant MeSH terms from text such as an abstract or grant summary. This tool uses natural language processing to generate suggested MeSH terms, so the results will not be the same as if it were done by a human, but it is a great place to start in determining which MeSH terms are appropriate.

The guide also suggests using the MeSH Browser, which allows the user to perform searches of MeSH terms. The MeSH Browser information page provides an overview of how this tool can be used.
