Canopy Medical Translator is a brand new iOS app that clinicians are sure to find useful. This app from NIH award-winning developer Canopy offers audio and text translations of phrases in four specialties (emergency medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, and obstetrics & gynecology) from English to Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, or Vietnamese. It also offers text-only translations to Filipino (Tagalog) and Malay.
The app comes with the emergency medicine specialty and Spanish language preloaded, but it is simple to download any of the additional specialties or languages you may want to access. To use the app, the clinician selects from a hierarchy of situations (e.g., Greeting & Goodbye, History, Physical Exam, Labs, Radiology, etc.) to rapidly find the appropriate phrase. Tap the play button, and the patient will hear the phrase as well as see it written in their language. The user can also create custom phrase “playlists” for frequently encountered situations. The app even has a Canopy Instructions section (within the Greeting & Goodbye section) that includes phrases such as “I will ask you some questions using this device. To answer, please nod your head for ‘yes’ and shake your head for ‘no,'” “To tell me numbers or dates, please use your fingers or write them down,” and “Would you like me to call a translator?” Speaking of, you can even call your hospital’s interpreter services department straight from the app.
Canopy Medical Translator for iPhone launched to the App Store in late February, but to use it you will need to enter an access code during app set-up. Because of great demand, Canopy has restricted the number of codes distributed during launch, but you can request an access code and Canopy will notify you when available. We also have the app all set up on the library iPads which are available for loan to hospital employees and come pre-loaded with a number of other useful medical apps!
