On Thursday, January 5th at noon and Friday, January 6th at 7:30 am our book group will discuss Still Alice, Lisa Genova’s novel about a Harvard psychology professor who is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. This degenerative illness is all too familiar to Genova, who witnessed the affects of the disease on her grandmother. Inspired by her research for Still Alice, Genova created a blog, which was last updated in August of this year, to share her reflections about and experiences with individuals affected by this disease. You can find more information about early onset Alzheimer’s at the Alzheimer’s Association website and read about genetics and Alzheimer’s disease from the National Institute of Health.
Interestingly, Lisa Genova, who earned a PhD in Neuroscience from Harvard, originally self-published Still Alice because she could not find a publisher who was willing to take on the novel. Simon and Schuster picked up the book after it received positive reviews on Amazon and in the Boston Globe.
