Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 3rd at noon (they will also be discussing Groopman’s How Doctors Think) and Friday, November 4th at 7:30. The book for discussion is The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates. The book’s website includes information about the author as well as a video of him and the media page provides links to some of his other television appearances. There is an interesting interview by Michele Norris on NPR. For anyone interested in further reading about the problems of growing up in poor, inner city neighborhoods, Alex Kotlowitz’s There Are No Children Here: The Story of Two Boys Growing Up in the Other America is a book to consider. One of the hopes for the book is that it will be a way to reach out and help struggling families and one organization helping in that effort is the National Fatherhood Initiative. U.S.A. Today interviewed several people, including both mothers, after the book was released. A review in The Oregonian is critical of the questions which Wes Moore does not ask.
