New: “Embryo” App for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

The National Library of Medicine has released “Embryo,” an app that provides a collection of digital serial sections of early stage human embryos, including videos of human fertilization, photo micrographs of early-stage embryo development, images using stack dissections, and a pregnancy calculator.  These images come from the National Museum of Health & Medicine’s Carnegie Embryo Collection, which was developed between 1887 and 1956 and focuses on the first eight weeks of normal embryo development.

The app is the result of a collaborative project between the National Library of Medicine, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development, the Virtual Human Embryo Project and the NationalMuseumof Health & Medicine’s HumanAnatomyCenter.  “Embryo” is available from the iTunes store http://itunes.apple.com/app/embryo/id422337604 and USA.gov http://apps.usa.gov/embryo/
